Don't Pack Away the Sunnies This Winter
Australia’s UV doesn’t follow the seasons. Yet wholesale sunglasses in Australia are still widely treated as a summer category, with displays packed away the moment the temperature drops. That’s a ranging gap worth holding onto.

The winter sun sits lower in the sky, creating sharper, more direct glare into the eyes. UV radiation remains present year-round, invisible and unfelt, reaching us through cloud cover and reflecting off surfaces like footpaths, grass, and car windscreens. Cancer Council Australia recommends eye protection whenever UV levels reach 3 or above. In most parts of the country, that’s every month of the year.
Young Eyes, Long-Term Stakes
Children spend more time outdoors than adults. They’re less likely to think about eye protection. And their eyes are genuinely more vulnerable.
Research published in the Ophthalmology Journal found that in children under 10, around 75% of UV radiation reaching the lens passes through to the interior of the eye, compared to far lower rates in adults. A child’s lens hasn’t yet developed the natural filtration that builds with age. UV damage is also cumulative. A study via the US National Institutes of Health estimates that Australian children may receive as much as 50% of their total lifetime UV dose before the age of 20.
Children being pushed in prams, playing in the backyard, or heading to weekend sport are still exposed to UV in winter, just from a slightly lower angle than summer. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and Cancer Council Australia both recommend that once children are old enough to wear sunglasses comfortably, they should do so whenever UV levels reach 3 or above, which occurs year-round across most of the country.
Sunglasses also act as a physical barrier against wind, dust, sand, and pollen, all of which can cause irritation or scratch the cornea. That protection is relevant every time a child steps outdoors, not just at the beach in January.
What Frankie Ray Brings to the Range
Frankie Ray is designed for children and backed by specs that support genuine eye protection. For retailers, that’s a reassuring combination to stand behind.
UV 400 lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB radiation, the maximum level of protection recommended by Optometry Australia, Cancer Council Australia, and RANZCO.
The A-grade shatterproof polycarbonate safety lenses provide impact resistance alongside UV protection, which is the standard the American Optometric Association recommends for active children’s eyewear.
Frankie Ray keeps a close eye on style too. That matters in-store. Children are more likely to wear sun protection consistently when they feel involved in choosing it, and when adults around them model the same habit. A range that kids actually want to wear is one that earns repeat purchases.
Where It Sits In-Store
Frankie Ray suits placement alongside outdoor play, adventure-themed ranges, or seasonal gifting fixtures. The range also complements accessories such as bags and jewellery for retailers building out a fashion destination. It also works as a natural companion to hats, beach and garden toys, and active play products. It doesn’t require a dedicated summer display to convert.
